The groups are divided by age level so that the activities are developmentally appropriate and the children will be able to meet other peers who have a similar loss. The activities are chosen to help group members to share their grief story.
A variety of activities such as music, games, journaling, stories and movement will give each child opportunities to share their grief experience. The groups will learn tools that help them to cope with their grief. The structure of the group will be the same each week but the topics change.
Topics include:
Telling My Story
Exploring Death
Identifying Changes
Memories or Remembering
Identifying and Expressing Feelings
Coping with Feelings
Learning Self Care and Support
Learning to Say Good-Bye
The goal is to provide a safe environment where each child can express their feelings and the pain of their loss. The groups are open-ended, and children can attend for as long as they feel they need to, in recognition of the uniqueness of each individual.
The day camp does not provide therapy nor does it teach children how to grieve. The aim of this grief support group is to provide an atmosphere of caring acceptance that acknowledges the individuality of the grief experience and that invites children to share their unique experience.
